Summary Synopsis : Since 2006, the AIS and partner NSOs have been working with CSIRO's Computational Modelling and Simulation Group to better understand forces and the position of the body to execute the most optimal technique. In Swimming, work was conducted to better understand what changes in body position would better propel athletes through water. Most recently, the group has conducted work in Diving to better understand the forces required to achieve optimal positioning in Diving. The work is highly individualised as the technique requires 3D scanning selected athletes, and digitising video data of those athletes performing their skills. The result of that work is a suite of highly detailed and physically realistic computer models of elite athletes that can be used to better understand the relationship between technique, performance and injury risk. Some of these models have been packaged for diving in the form of a software program called Dive Mechanic that was developed in consultation with Diving coaches to support the coach / athlete discussion around the execution of dives. This presentation highlighted the main features of Dive Mechanic and the other modelling and data preparation capabilities of the group, and challenged the audience as to whether the tool might be beneficial in other sports..
