Presenter |
Presenter : Dr Araron S Finestone, MD, MHA, Medicine Doctor Assaf HaRofeh/Orthopaedics, Israel. Born UK, 1960, now living in Reut, Israel since 1970, married with 4 children. He works in the Foot and Ankle at the Assaf HaRofeh Medical Center, Zeriffin and is a senior lecturer (assistant professor) at the Sackler School of Medicine in the Tel Aviv University. He qualified the Hebrew University of Jerusalem Medical School in 1985, and finished residency in orthopaedic surgery in 2001. Dr. Finestone spent many years working in the Israel Defense Force Medical Corps, particularly with infantry recruits, and has published several dozen papers on their training injuries, including stress fractures, patellofemoral pain, back pain and the use of orthotics. He is now running a project trying to measure soldiers’ ambulation with GPS loggers, and determine both how much soldiers actually ambulate, and whether stress fractures or other overuse injuries can be related to much ground a recruit covered. In recent years, Dr Finestone has started taking interest in myofascial pain, probably responsible for many of the orthopaedic problems both in the general population, and particularly in trainees. He has noted that even though muscle is the biggest organ in the body, and muscle pathology is responsible for a tremendous amount of clinical complaints, training in medical school and in most residencies (including orthopaedics) does not include even one lecture on the topic, where a full clinical training program is appropriate. Other projects Dr. Finestone is involved in include improving the clinical skills of clinicians so they can recognize the symptoms of myofascial pain, preventing the tremendous abuse of imaging (both with and without ionizing radiation) and continued research on stress fractures and overuse injuries. |
Summary |
The 2014 Bone Health in Sport Symposium was presented by Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) in collaboration with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), the Australasian College of Sports Practitioners and Sports Physiotherapy Australia. In 2014 the conference looked at bone health and its management. Bone injuries tend to be high in cost and have a high level of recurrence. This makes management important. Current research points towards a multifactorial nature of these injuries, which means that a multidisciplinary approach is essential. Drawing on talent from overseas and Australia from across the sports medicine spectrum, the conference was practical and topical. It is relevant to those involved with the grass roots athletes, through to the defence forces and the elite. |
