Presenter Presenter : Associate Professor Madhusmita Misra, MD, MPH, Program Director, Pediatric Endocrinology; Associate Professor of Pediatrics Mass General Hospital for Children and Harvard Medical School, Boston. Dr Misra is an endocrinologist and clinical researcher from Massachusetts General Hospital. Her research has focused on the neuroendocrine regulation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal (H-P-G) axis, particularly as it relates to bone metabolism. Her most recent work indicates that adipokines and appetite regulating peptides are possible mediators of the association between low fat mass and suppression of the H-P-G axis in teenage amenorrheic athletes. This may contribute to low bone density in these individuals. A better understanding of the neuroendocrine system will improve our practice across medicine, physiotherapy and nutrition in the prevention, diagnosis and management of bone injury in our athletes. Medical Education MPH, Harvard School of Public Health MBBS, Utkal University Residency, Maimonides Medical Center Fellowship, Massachusetts General Hospital. Clinical Interests: Growth and nutritional disorders; Pituitary disease; Cushing’s syndrome; Disorders of calcium and bone; Neuroendocrinology General pediatric endocrinology; Pubertal disorders; Thyroid and adrenal disorders; Diabetes mellitus type 1; Disorders of sexual differentiation.
Summary The 2014 Bone Health in Sport Symposium was presented by Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) in collaboration with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), the Australasian College of Sports Practitioners and Sports Physiotherapy Australia. In 2014 the conference looked at bone health and its management. Bone injuries tend to be high in cost and have a high level of recurrence. This makes management important. Current research points towards a multifactorial nature of these injuries, which means that a multidisciplinary approach is essential. Drawing on talent from overseas and Australia from across the sports medicine spectrum, the conference was practical and topical. It is relevant to those involved with the grass roots athletes, through to the defence forces and the elite.
